University education, party seniority, and elite recruitment in China

Article Abstract:

This article examines the influence of higher education and membership status in the Chinese Communist Party on social mobility and elite recruitment in China. Findings from an analysis of Chinese government officials indicate that both political loyalty and educational credentials are key factors in leadership selection in the Chinese government system.

Explaining life chances in China's economic transformation: a life course approach

Article Abstract:

The authors examine the link between institutional change, specifically the transformation in the People's Republic of China, and individual's life chances. The authors' research shows that great societal transformations impact the individual and that life-course timing and location mediates opportunity and risk.

Income of the urban elderly in postreform China: political capital, human capital, and the State

Article Abstract:

The authors analyze findings on income stratification among urban elderly in China since 1978. Topics include the increased importance of human capital, the ability of the party elite to find power in emerging markets, and the continued importance of redistribute activities by the government.
