Voices of Emancipation: Union pension files giving voice to former slaves

Article Abstract:

Civil War pension files of the former slaves who joined the Union army depict the first person account of the slavery and reveal the experience of former slaves, especially as they themselves described it, before, during, and after the Civil War. Civil War pension files and their depositions in particular is a priceless document and the Voices of Emancipation portray the African-American experience in the postwar period.

Private Lewis Martin and his brief war

Article Abstract:

In 1994 Private Lewis Martin's photograph was uncovered by Civil War Conservation Corps (CWCC) and was one of those where African American men display for the camera their wounds, proving their disability and their eligibility for discharge from the Union army. African Americans in the Union forces fought not only Confederate foes on the battlefield, but faced opposition within the Federal ranks.

Plans of a Civil War army post to maps of famous battles- the maps, plans, and charts found in the Cartographic section of the National Archives provide a unique, and rewarding perspective for genealogists. NARA's book "A Guide to Civil War Maps in the National Archives" (1986) provides maps based on subjects like campaigns, military posts, cities, towns and counties.
