When is the economy monocentric?: von Thunen and Chamberlin unified

Article Abstract:

The concept of manufacturing goods in a single town in a single isolated state was first popularized by von Thunen in his book 'The Isolated State,' which was published in 1826. However, no systematic rationale has been given to support the assumption that manufactured goods have to be produced in a single town. A monopolistic competition model of an isolated state was developed to determine the conditions under which the production of all manufactured goods may be concentrated in a single town, and thus help in the development of a general equilibrium model of urban systems.

Structural stability and evolution of urban systems

Article Abstract:

An evolutionary approach to understanding the urban system theory, using a simple prototype of an urban system with one manufacturing industry and the agricultural sector, is presented. The theory proposes to rationalize the evolution of a defined spatial configuration of an economy as its inhabitants grow slowly over time. It was demonstrated that new cities are formed every so often caused by the fateful bifurcation of the current system. Moreover, the urban system will near a highly a notably central place system as the number of cities rises.
