Women in the shadow of AIDS: are they the forgotten victims?

Article Abstract:

AIDS is affecting increasing numbers of women, but government policies are worsening rather than alleviating the medical, social and legal problems that these women face. The Centers for Disease Control observes a too-narrow definition of AIDS that excludes many HIV virus-infected women. The Social Security Administration uses this definition to bar many women with AIDS from receiving disability payments, although Congress is now moving to redress this inequity. Discriminatory policies and attitudes such as these must be reversed if the status of HIV-infected women is to be improved.

Norplant: miracle drug or threat to women's rights?

Article Abstract:

Women's civil rights are violated when they are forced to insert a Norplant device as a condition to the continued receipt of public benefits or as part of a civil or criminal sentence. Judicial and legislative attempts to force Norplant on women have been carried out in a racially disparate way and have specifically targeted only women's, not men's, reproductive rights, two factors warranting strict judicial scrutiny under equal protection and substantive due process guarantees. Forced contraception also violates freedom of religion and unduly burdens the rights of probationers.

ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee remembers those who have been lost to the AIDS pandemic

Article Abstract:

The American Bar Association established the AIDS Coordinating Committee to address legal policy issues raised by AIDS and HIV. The primary focus of the Committee's work is laws affecting the rights of people with HIV/AIDS. At the Committee's fall 1996 meeting, members participated in the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. The quilt's display in Washington, DC, included a reading of the names of people that died as a result of AIDS. Names of two former Committee members were included.
