Article Abstract:

The records of the US Circuit Court for the District of Columbia contain a series of habeas corpus cases dating from 1820 to 1863 that illustrate how individuals either residing in or traveling through Washington D.C. during these years relied upon the writ of habeas corpus to secure their release from unlawful confinement. The major topics covered in habeas corpus cases include crimes, apprenticeship and family issues, insolvency and bankruptcy, African Americans and slavery and enlistments in the military.

Those early Americans: Public lands and claims in the American State Papers, 1789-1837

Article Abstract:

The 'American State Papers' is a 38-volume published compilation of executive and legislative records dating from 1789 to 1838. The thousands of claims and other records in the American State Papers preserved from the Archives and manuscript records of the Senate and House of Representatives contain a wealth of information on individuals and families living in America during this period.

The Rotunda for the charters of freedom reopens at the National Archives

Article Abstract:

The leaders of the three branches of the federal government gathered to rededicate the renovated Rotunda and disclosed the Charters of Freedom on the Constitution Day. The principles embodied in the Charters and its ideals they proclaimed were for the entire mankind.
