Article Abstract:

The main reason for the survival of the concept of rank in contemporary Liangshan Yi areas is due to the sociocultural rank system by which people are divided into high and low, noble and humble. However, it is concluded that the concept of rank that still survives will gradually disappear as the socialist modernization of Liangshan Yi areas progresses.

Article Abstract:

The four ranks, nuoho, qunuo, mgajie and gaxy, based on respected or humble blood lineage and the relationships between the concept of rank and the four modernizations are discussed. The class divisions of 1956 Democratic Reforms believe that the class and rank divisions in Liangshan Yi slave society were almost identical.

The Liangshan Yi society is a large ethnic minority in China with a population of over 6.5 million. Research shows that pre-Democratic Reforms still have a dominant role in the scientific research and practical significance. The four ranks of the Liangshan Yi society before the Democratic Reforms are explained.
