A typology of the urban poor in Turkey

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted in Ankara, Turkey, reveals doers, losers, and accommodators as the 3 types of urban poor. The three types correspond to three subcultures, which are manifested differently as per the socio-economic and cultural contexts of different countries. The post-1980 economic conditions in Turkey are responsible for their emergence. The doers have a disposition for optimism and upward mobility in the hierarchy. The accommodators have balanced mobility and they perceive stability in their living standards. The losers are pessimistic and have downward hierarchial mobility.
