Activating a mental simulation mind-set through generation of alternatives: Implications for debiasing in related and unrelated domains

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to explore the role of ease generation in the activation of a mental simulation mind-set and the generalization of its debiasing effects to subsequent unrelated contexts. The research suggested that there are alternative ways to induce a mental simulation mind-set beyond counterfactual priming, and the activation of a mental simulation mind-set in an unrelated domain generalizes to debias subsequent likelihood judgments.

The mental simulation of better aand worse possible worlds

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the occurence of counterfactual thoughts or imagined alternatives to real events. Results indicate that downward counterfactuals or worse alternatives aid people in coping with a present situation and are usually activated during states of dissatisfation. On the other hand, positive counterfactuals or better world scenarios serve as guides for future improvement.

A functional perspective on group memberships: Differential need fulfillment in a group typology

Article Abstract:

The possibility that the perceived functions of intimacy, task, and social category groups, particularly the needs that are fulfilled by membership in each type of group, contribute to the way people perceive and organize information about groups of these types is explored. Results support the hypothesis that the functionality of a group guides people's perceptions and representations of that group.
