Attention deficit disorder: problems with preconceived diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Preconceived diagnosis of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects the outcome of treatment. Parents and teachers who sought to confirm their own diagnosis of ADHD in children were more likely to have positive results from treatment if their diagnosis was confirmed, but if not confirmed, results tended to be negative. People are blaming problems with children on ADHD and not accepting other diagnoses. Mental health professions need to help educate parents and school personnel on the realities of ADHD.
