Bad movie/worse history: the 1995 unmaking of 'The Scarlet Letter.'
Article Abstract:
Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Scarlet Letter' is widely acclaimed as the classic American novel but the 1995 motion picture loose adaptation of the novel lost almost $50 million at the box office despite starring top actors Robert Duvall, Gary Oldman and Demi Moore. The novel is a psychological drama incorporating dramatic themes such as cowardice, heroism and adultery, but numerous film critics despised the adaptation which bears little similarity to Hawthorne's text. The motion picture was reviled for being cliche-ridden and overtly politically correct, with Moore's portrayal of Hester particularly despised.

The selling of barrier protection, the telling of organic sociability
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine HIV education in relation to culture, economic condition and condom advertising. The placement of condoms in pharmacies, in particular, reflects its association with disease and death. In south Florida, only wayward women are expected to use condoms while good girls are not expected to need them. Results show that HIV education is burdened by the legacy of capitalism which reserves the best for those who can afford it.
