Blocking, unblocking, and overexpectation in autoshaping with pigeons

Article Abstract:

An autoshaping procedure and a single-subject design that use pigeons, show the generality of blocking, unblocking, and overexpectation effects resulting from their extension to appetitive unconditioned stimuli. Results also show the usefulness of single-subject designs, the suitability of pigeons as subjects and autoshaping as a means of studying classical conditioning. The number of responses per trial falls when food quantity in the compound trials is unaltered. However, the number of responses per trial is the same when food quantity in the compound trials is increased.

Within-session changes in responding during autoshaping and automaintenance procedures

Article Abstract:

Pigeons show flatter, late-peak, and more symmetrical responses during autoshaping, negative automaintenance or variable-interval schedule sessions, when the rate of food presentation is lower. Similar variables may be responsible for within session changes in responses during classical and operant conditioning. Such changes have implications for the theory and methodology of classical conditioning.
