Censoring Hollywood: youth, moral panic and crime/gangster movies of the 1930s

Article Abstract:

'Moral panic' is a term used to describe excessive public concern which may focus on behavior, or on aspects of culture seen as likely to promote misbehavior. Gangster movies were seen as endangering children's morals in the 1930s, and some young men who were already criminally inclined may have used gangster movies as one source for behavioral cues. This does not mean that the movies did more that suggest what form such crimes might take. Entertainment that is popular among young people has, throughout history, aroused social concern, and this includes modern computer games.

Jazz cricketers: the New World in the popular culture of north west England, 1890s to the 1930s

Article Abstract:

Popular culture of north west England took shape during the late nineteenth-century under the influence of American cultural traits. Its fashion, seaside holiday, and sports reflect significant influences of modern America. League cricket of the region reflects this fusion most suitably. Balance between the old and new took place under socio-cultural practices of the New World represented by America. Americanization of British social and cultural traditions is debated by British intellectuals but its influence, nevertheless, cannot be denied.

Opera in gangster movies: from Capone to Coppola

Article Abstract:

The stereotypical attitude of Americans towards Italian gangsters, Italian opera and foreigners are depicted in a number of movies. A prime exception to the anti-opera attitude was the popularity of Italian tenor Enrico Caruso who was adored by gangsters such as Big Jim Colosimo and Al Capone. Among the most popular movies dealing with gangsters and the opera are Francis Ford Coppola's 'Godfather' series which used operatic elements such as arias, duets and trios.
