Chinese sociology in a transitional society

Article Abstract:

Sociology has made much intellectual and institutional development in China since 1979 following its re-establishment after abolition in 1952. American and Chinese sociologists have been involved in much interaction, with the Americans keenly interested in China's changing stratification processes. Diversity is growing in Chinese sociology research, with new interest growing in areas such as lifestyles, sexuality and gender. Sociological inquiries have been stimulated by accelerated social change in China, with the government sponsoring research to develop social policy.

Sociology in Bangladesh

Article Abstract:

Sociological research in Bangladesh has been impacted by a historical lack of funding, with much sociological activity comprising participant-observation village studies or individual dissertations. Growth of research has continued to be prevented by the lack of methodology and the general decline in educational standards. Sociologists in Bangladesh have historically focused little on method and theory, but research areas of growing popularity include gender studies and population studies.
