Choice with delayed and probabilistic reinforcers: effects of prereinforcer and postreinforcer stimuli

Article Abstract:

Delay and probability of reinforcement are two variables which have been shown to affect human and animal behavior in select situations. Two experiments were conducted on pigeons to investigate their behavior relating to delay and probability of reinforcement. Results of the studies support the notion that a stimulus can serve as a conditioned reinforcer at certain but not at other times depending on whether or not there is a possibility that a primary reinforcer will be delivered.

Choice with certain and uncertain reinforcers in an adjusting-delay procedure

Article Abstract:

Idiosyncratic preferences in pigeons for certain colors or differences in delay interval stimuli influence preference for partial over 100% reinforcement under the adjusting-delay paradigm. The paradigm depends on the position of stimuli during the delay between choice response and reinforcement. The preference effect is absent in conditions where differences in delay stimulus colors are equated for 50% and 100% reinforcements.

Choice in a successive-encounters procedure and hyperbolic decay of reinforcement

Article Abstract:

The hyperbolic-decay model uses the equation method for showing the choice procedures of the pigeons in taking food. The conclusion drawn from the result patterns is that the value of a reinforcer is inversely related to the delay in search and handling states.
