Comment on Turner

Article Abstract:

Turner's idea of establishing a sociological engineering subset within the general discipline of sociology can be achieved by creating a profession of sociology that links sociological theories to practice. To this end, the Sociological Practice Association and the Society for Applied Sociology formed the Commission on Applied and Clinical Sociology. Its goals are to distribute resources to academic institutions that wish to develop applied and clinical programs in sociology and to advance the licensing of sociological practitioners in the United States based on accreditation.

Response to commentary

Article Abstract:

The idea of creating a sociological engineering subset within the general discipline of sociology to address real-world social problems raises several important issues in sociological practice and theory. In the teaching of sociology, training in survey research is not supported with training in observational and historical methods. In practice, sociological practitioners themselves have problems with identity and relevance. Furthermore, the degree of intellectual conflict within American sociology inhibits sociology's transition to an engineering discipline.

The sociology of the future and the future of sociology

Article Abstract:

The practice of sociology as a discipline, as a profession and as a field of inquiry can be enhanced by several lessons from the futures movements. These involve seeing individuals as active agents who chart their own future, having a global and holistic perspective, and replacing postmodern ideologies with critical realism. In addition, sociologists should return to moral discussions on how to improve the well-being of societies.
