Course and treatment of patients with both substance abuse and posttraumatic stress disorders

Article Abstract:

Empirical research on the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs)-posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comorbidity are analyzed. It is shown that PTSD afflicts large numbers of SUD patients and influence SUD treatment outcomes and barriers to treatment. Thus, substance abuse programs should include a screening of SUD patients for PTSD and the provision of intensified substance abuse counseling to SUD-PTSD patients.

Substance use and posttraumatic stress disorders: symptom interplay and effects on outcome

Article Abstract:

The study examined concurrent and prospective associations between substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis and mechanisms underlying these associations. Findings suggest that clinicians should assess for PTSD among those with SUD and, during treatment, should monitor PTSD and other psychological symptoms, which may be risk factors for relapse to substance use.
