Cultural pluralism and Asian-Americans: culturally sensitive social work practice

Article Abstract:

The inability of social workers to serve Asian-American people in the US due to a lack of understanding of the cultural and ethnic factors of these people has necessitated the establishment of a new perspective, the cultural pluralism model, which focuses on educating and training ethnically competent social workers to work effectively with these minority groups. The social work practice in the US lacked understanding of the cultural values and social needs and hence did not give adequate attention to ethnic minorities. The cultural pluralism model aimed to train competent social workers with proper skills, attitudes and knowledge of Asian culture to help Asian minority groups.

Social functioning discourse in a Chinese context: developing social work in mainland China

Article Abstract:

It is argued that social work is a social construct and so the meaning of social work and a key notion in the profession, called social functioning, should be grasped within its context. Three inherent failings are seen in the concept of social functioning that require social workers to review their essential beliefs and seek culturally appropriate interpretations. However, social functioning translated in a Chinese context both cultural and historical must be interpreted very differently. This is discussed at length.
