Defining identification: a theoretical look at the identification of audiences with media characters

Article Abstract:

This article examines the social impact of audience identification of media characters. The author, asserting audience identification in media research has been neglected, discusses the link between socialization and identification with media characters and the consequences of media influence over an audience in which social attitudes can be manipulated.

Parasocial breakups: measuring individual differences in responses to the dissolution of parasocial relationships

Article Abstract:

Parasocial relationship is the relationship that exists between the television viewers and the characters they watch and involve feelings and reactions toward characters. Study on parasocial relationship reveals that, although women develop stronger parasocial relationships, they do not react differently than men, to expected breakup.

Article Abstract:

The framework of the third person effect is used to examine parents' perceptions of the influence of a youth-targeted on their own versus other children. How parents' perceptions of the influence of harmful media messages, and their beliefs about them, affect their parenting practices, is explored.
