Effects of menstrual phase on reactivity to nicotine

Article Abstract:

Twelve healthy women smokers in four hormonally verified menstrual phases were given controlled doses of nicotine via an intranasal aerosol delivery device. The aim was to examine the possible impact of menstrual phase on reactivity to nicotine. There was no significant difference in nicotine increment across sessions, confirming the dosing method's reliability. A significant difference across phase was noted in cycle-related symptomatology. Baseline variables, including withdrawal measures, showed no substantial differences, neither were there any significant menstrual phase differences for physiological, subjective or biochemical reactivity variable tested.
