Ending the stalemate: moving H/CD programs into the future

Article Abstract:

Organized efforts to reinvigorate deteriorating cities and urban areas have not made any significant progress since attempts to develop an effective urban policy were abandoned in the 1970s. This stalemate has predictably resulted in greater blight and decline. As of 1980, there were as much as 17 administrative agencies and departments that were reportedly in charge of implementing a proposed urban policy. What is urgently needed to solve the problem of urban decay is a permanent national commission tasked with coordinating all the efforts of these various agencies around an agreed upon urban policy. This institution would focus on such issues as evaluating the needs and conditions of American central cities and urban areas, formulating a national urban policy based on the needs of urban regions, working with the President's Council of Economic Advisors, and making arrangements with federal financing organizations.

Transit planning as a vehicle for successful development

Article Abstract:

Access to public transit is a big part of success in community development and it makes the development attractive to a wider range of people, including both those who do not have cars and those who own one but prefer to use public transit in order to save time from finding parking places. Successful transit planning involves getting public transit authorities involved early in the planning stages, so that transit planning is optimized.
