Enrollment in a drug-free detention program: the prediction of successful behavior change of drug-using inmates

Article Abstract:

Enrollment in a drug-free detention program fails to predict successful behavior change related to substance abuse, continuity of drug care, criminal recidivism, and psychological functioning among drug-using inmates. The detainees' background, such as early drug use, high self-esteem, poor family functioning, and the lack of prior drug-free detention, influence attendance rates at the drug treatment agencies' meetings. While a normal regime can predict changes in psychological functioning and substance abuse, high income leads to reduction of addiction severity and the use of hard drugs.
