Ethnic identity and aspirations among rural Alaska youth

Article Abstract:

An examination of rural Alaskan students' occupational and academic aspirations and their attitudes regarding ethnicity revealed several notable findings. Opinions of parents and grandparents with regard to education were found to be important factors in determining whether students' would decide to pursue higher studies or not. Native students were observed to be less inclined to consider leaving rural Alaska for college or cities. In addition, female students tended to be more attracted to the idea of moving out of their home regions than male students.

Socialization, life situations, and gender-role attitudes regarding the family among white American women

Article Abstract:

No direct relationship exists between socialization, as characterized by the influence of their mothers' educational attainment to women's educational attainment, and gender-role attitudes. This was revealed by the results of a study of the socialization or social-learning theory and situational theory as applied to white women in the US. An indirect relationship between socialization and attitudes through women's life situations, as characterized by women's life course stages and the composition of their social networks, was noted, however.
