Familial risk for alcoholism and hangover symptoms

Article Abstract:

The relation between familial and personality risk for alcoholism and hangover was examined, with 20 sons of alcoholics (SOAs) and 20 sons of nonalcoholics (SONAs) comprising the sample. The subjects completed the MacAndrew scale as an index of personality risk for alcoholism as well as the McCaul et al and Newlin and Pretorious assessments of hangover. Results revealed key effects for familial risk for both hangover questionnaires. Significantly more severe hangover symptoms were reported by SOAs compared to SONAs. More acute withdrawal and hangover were reportedly experienced by individuals at higher familial risk for alcoholism.
