Formative security, education, and postmaterialism: a response to Davis

Article Abstract:

James A. Davis' extensive critique of 'Value Change in Global Perspective' made its authors further analyze the impact of formative socialization experiences on the development of attitudes. Although Davis agrees that generational replacement pushes postmaterialism upward, he contends that appropriate multivariate analyses were needed for the study. Using a multivariate test similar to Davis' in studying the political action surveys made in the 1970s, the thesis that the trend toward postmaterialism is being driven by generational replacement was supported.

Comment on Davis: yes, but ... public opinion is a top-down process

Article Abstract:

James A. Davis' article on the liberal and conservative aspects of the public's attitude provides important observations about the study of public opinion and about the association between public policy and public opinion. Davis' study shows that there was little change in the fundamental nature of public opinion during the 1970s and 1980s, but policy became more conservative. The relationship between policy and opinion was a 'top-down' process. Policymakers made changes in public policy on the basis of their perceptions of public opinion.

Race, public opinion, and the social sphere

Article Abstract:

Theoretical ideas accumulated over the years through research findings focused on race and racism, as well as their political roles in a diverse cultural setting, illustrate the existence of genocidal ethnic conflicts. Racial attitudes are linked to the social processes in a broader cultural perspective. The need to understand the social impact through public opinion created by racial studies is emphasized.
