Acculturative stress and self-esteem among Puerto Rican migrant children

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to study the effects that migration to the US and the subsequent return to Puerto Rico have on Puerto Rican children. The children, with ages from 10 years to 11 years 4 months, were divided into two groups, one with children who never migrated and the other with children who have migrated. They were administered the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and the Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale. Results indicate group differences in self-esteem and self-concept. A curriculum to aid migrant children and in-service training for teachers are suggested.
