Growth and the environment: allies or foes?

Article Abstract:

Economic growth has been rapid in southeast Asia, but environmental problems have also arisen, such as soil erosion, pollution and deforestation. Many policies that promote growth, such as improvements in sanitation, can help the environment, but other policies are also needed, such as pollution control. Pollution can bring health costs, and ecological damage may be irreversible, such as loss of biodiversity. There are a number of ways to deal with the problem. They include planting fruit trees in upland areas, rather than crops such as maize which are not sustainable. Pollution taxes can raise revenue, and forestry taxes can be levied where reforestation is not carried out.

The divergence of longstanding allies

Article Abstract:

The implications for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization of the possible acquisition of a missile defense by the US are analyzed. This issue may have a more long-term effect than the events in Kosovo, Yugoslavia in view of a less predictable and more unstable world created by the ending of the Cold War. These changes are expected to place additional strains on international alliances that had been organized in the early 1950s specifically to deal with the bipolar situation that was then emerging.

Why international theater missile defense is still a challenge rather than a reality

Article Abstract:

No other country has given missile defense high priority besides the US and Israel yet many nations support peace initiatives by deploying troops in hot spots around the world. This ambivalence regarding Theater Missile Defense Initiative spending can be traced to the absence of a common perceived threat and the desire of many countries to cut back on defense spending. Other factors contributing to the lack of interest in missile defense and measures to address these concerns are presented.
