Individual versus group interest violation: suprise as a determinant of argument scrutiny and persuasion

Article Abstract:

This article analyzes attributes of persuasion in which a source which takes an unexpected position is found to be more accurate and trustworthy than those arguing from an expected position. The authors find that when the unexpected position is a violation of individual self-interest that subject is found trustworthy, however this does not occur when the unexpected position violates the interest of the group, in which case surprise is produced.

Procedural and legal motivations to correct for perceived judicial biases

Article Abstract:

An examination of the effects of procedural or legal concerns on jurors' judgements was conducted by exposing mock jury members to diagnostic incriminating evidence. The findings suggested that bias correction was motivated by both procedural justice motivation and legal motivation. Furthermore, procedural concerns were found capable of overriding concerns about following the law and concerns on accuracy.
