Intervening with homeless youths: direct practice without blaming the victim

Article Abstract:

Inadequate policy guidelines in the US for helping homeless youths necessitate effective intervention by social workers. Two subgroups, youths and teen mothers with children, comprise the homeless youth community. Social workers should intervene at an early stage, before the victims get acclimatized to homelessness and returning to mainstream becomes tough. The three models of 'family centered social work practice,' 'intensive structural therapy,' and working with 'families in perpetual crisis' fit into the ecological systems concept of guiding the homeless.

Of factories and failures: exploring the invisible factory gates of Horatio Alger, Jr

Article Abstract:

Horatio Alger, Jr., authored the 'Gilded Age' tales which chronicled the escape of 19th-Century youth from poverty and were meant to convey that morality and virtue, as opposed to wealth, were the true measures of success. However, Alger's stories separated economic success from the harsh realities of the 19th. The stories lacked realism since they avoided issues, such as the factory system, to ensure the success of the main character and depicted failure as the inability to obtain stable employment and income.
