The public intellectual trope in the United States

Article Abstract:

The "public intellectual" trope is taken as the case study and its usage in elite public sphere of the contemporary United States since itEs coining in 1987 is traced. The trope analysis identifies principles and strategies under contest in the journalistic, academic, and political fields of the contemporary United States by focusing on the play of tropes around the public intellectual and examining the authoritative cultural members who use trope.

Doing social science in anti-scientific times

Article Abstract:

The nature of anti-scientific climate prevailing in the United States and the origins of the hostility, are discussed. An alternate vision for how sociologists, as social scientists, should respond to the challenges of doing social science in anti-scientific times is proposed.
