Law and ethics

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the sterilization of a severely retarded woman, ethical considerations in genetic testing and Do Not Attempt to Resuscitation orders on terminally ill patients were discussed. The Pennsylvania and US Supreme Courts allowed the sterilization due to concerns that the woman could be impregnated by male patients. Physicians should become aware of the ethical considerations regarding genetic testing and information. Physicians reported that they applied the principle of futility in carrying out Do Not Attempt to Resuscitation orders on terminally ill patients.

Law and ethics

Article Abstract:

Research studies and surveys conducted regarding euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide revealed conflicting views on the two concepts. The survey of Back, Wallace, Starks and Pearlman showed a clear delineation between assisted suicide and euthanasia. On the other hand, David Asch's study incorrectly combined the two into one concept. The mistake was further aggravated by the use of vague examples and the application of the word 'specific intent.'
