Legislative and cultural strategies in the fight against the Mafia

Article Abstract:

The Mafia is most effective in a culture lacking long-term crime opposition, with a weak political ideology, and a judicial system unprepared to address organized crime. Palermo's success in reducing Mafia activity lies in efforts at international, state, territorial, and socio-psychological levels.

The church's moral condemnation of the Mafia and the clergy's role in the parish

Article Abstract:

The Catholic Church, as part of its Jubilee Year in 2000, rededicates itself to an anti-Mafia struggle. This effort will be enacted at the levels of cultural and moral formation, redemption, and pastoral method that frees all believers in Christ from ties to Mafia culture.

Sicily, Italy, has spent over a century dominated by the brutality and lawlessness of the Mafia, but that began to significantly change in the early 1990s. Palermo's example especially demonstrates how every civil society has the potential to oppose illegality.
