Limitations of the Patient Health Questionnaire in identifying anxiety and depression in community mental health: Many cases are undetected

Article Abstract:

The concordance between the Structural Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) was determined in diagnosing anxiety and depressive disorders, considering that accurate diagnosis is vital to the correct treatment of any health disorder including mental ailments. The findings suggested that the PHQ had limited diagnostic success in identifying depressed individuals with dysthymia and hence needs to be used with caution.
