Medical consequences of child sexual abuse

Article Abstract:

The medical and long-term consequences of child sexual abuse are discussed. Medical disorders associated with the abuse are gastrointestinal problems, gynecologic conditions, neurologic disorders, pain syndromes and somatic problems. Suggested research approaches and fields in the sequelae study are prospective studies, patient follow-up, demographic studies, men as victims and health services utilization. Barriers to the research on the consequences are research funding, distinction between medical and psychological symptoms and selection of patients abused as children.

Medical consequences of child sexual abuse

Article Abstract:

A panel discussion on the review of medical sequelae of child sexual abuse is presented. Possible complications associated with anal penetration are bleeding, cryptitis and sexually transmitted diseases. Low self-esteem is the common factor in gynecologic complaints. Cognitive development is also linked to disease somatization. Increased incidence of enuresis, encopresis and urinary track infections are additional associated complications of sexual abuse.

Medical consequences of child sexual abuse: commentary

Article Abstract:

The research on the medical sequelae of child sexual abuse are not only limited to the physical aspects but mental health considerations must also be addressed. Special centers are established providing forensic medical examinations, interviews and medical and mental health care for immediate needs. Also, further research on the practice of determining mental health status of the victim before making mental health referrals is emphasized.
