Article Abstract:

The author discusses the development of his theories on advertising and consumer culture; he also argues for the need for media literacy. Issues include consumerism, mass media and commercial culture in society and academia; the social and political influence of popular culture over people's concepts of reality is addressed, as is the power of media in creating an undemocratic political system.

The third-person effect: a meta-analysis of the perceptual hypothesis

Article Abstract:

The results of a meta-analysis of the third-person effect's perceptual hypothesis are discussed. The hypothesis predicts that people think the persuasive effect of the media more present in other people than in themselves. A group of 32 published and unpublished studies with 121 separate effect sizes were examined.

The extensions of men: the correspondence of Marshall McLuhan and Edward T. Hall

Article Abstract:

A discussion of the correspondence between Marshall McLuhan and Edward T. Hall, the founder of intercultural communication, is given. Their letters give insightt into the evolution of such ideas as media technological determinism and McLuhan's concept that the medium is the message.
