Newcomers: legal realities, the Christian imagination and the Judeo-Christian tradition of hope

Article Abstract:

Catholic social teaching departs greatly from US immigration laws and the society's hostility towards immigrants. Catholic doctrines on migrants preaches about loving neighbors who were made in the likeness of God, the poor and the marginalized and the breaking down of barriers between different nationalities. Christian teaching also provides hope for migrants unlike the immigration and welfare reform laws passed in 1997 which serve to create, rather than solve, problems for them.

The new immigrants: tensions and opportunities for the Church in America

Article Abstract:

The Catholic Church in America should not allow the tensions of intercultural interaction to stand in the way of preaching the Gospel to new immigrants. Instead, these tensions that stem from linguistic and cultural differences must be viewed as opportunities to minister sensitively and pastorally to these people. The Church can derive a lesson from the experience of the early Church with Gentile Christians, wherein a diaconate was established to see to the needs of the converts.
