Article Abstract:

The death of openly-gay student Michael Shepard from injuries he suffered when he was beaten up offers an opportunity to discuss reactions about sudden and violent deaths and the intense public mourning that follows these tragic events. These are also times to talk about disenfranchised grief and the role of advocacy efforts in dealing with loss. Social work educators can combine their profession and their knowledge about death, dying and grief in helping people cope with these unfortunate incidents.
