Obtaining nationally representative samples of local news media outlets

Article Abstract:

An approach to constructing a valid national sample of local news outlets is presented. Researchers can create a nationally representative sample of local media, including television and newspaper outlets, using designated market areas that represent the dominant geographic area of influence for television stations.

Stereotypical portrayals of emotionality in news photos

Article Abstract:

The news photographs of the major U.S. daily newspaper are analyzed to examine the emotional portrayals of individuals in different gender, age and ethnic subgroups. The results demonstrate that emotionality was stereotyped to some degree, particularly in relation to women, ethnic minorities and senior citizens.

Effects of image-issue and positive-negative scene orders in broadcast news

Article Abstract:

An experiment is conducted to analyse the effects of image issue scene orders and positive-negative scene orders on viewers with broadcast news stories about political candidates. Results found no main order effect of image-issue and positive negative scenes on viewers.
