Parenting difficulties among adult survivors of father-daughter incest

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to confirm the claim that women who were child incest victims of their fathers experience difficulty in providing adequate parenting to their own children. Three groups of women served as respondents, 20 of whom had fathers who were both incestuous and and alcoholic, 25 had alcholic but not sexually abusive fathers and 39 did not have serious problems with their fathers. Findings proved that women incest victims are not good in parenting. They expressed feelings of helplessness in exerting their authority and control over their children.

Long-term effects of incest: life events triggering mental disorders in female patients with sexual abuse in childhood

Article Abstract:

Thirty-three female psychiatric patients were studied for long-term effects of incest and sexual abuse. Psychosocial, psychosomatic and psychodynamic factors displayed by the patients were analyzed. It was established that abuse lasted for a long period of time and patients experienced anxiety, helplessness and powerlessness which persisted even after the incest to their adult relationships. All the findings support Bowlby's theory that abuse and rejection of the child evntually lead to grave psychological effects.

The specific effects of incest on prepubertal girls from dysfunctional families

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the effects of incest experiences on the psychological make-up of young girls. Two groups of girls, 8 to 14 years of age, served as respondents. One group had 29 subjects from problematic families who were incest victims and the other had 28 from equally dysfunctional familiies without any incest experiences. Findings revealed that girls with incest experiences had lower opinion of themselves and had more conflicts with their mothers.
