Political voice, fiduciary activism, and the institutional ownership of U.S. corporations: the role of public and noncorporate pension funds

Article Abstract:

A change in the ownership of US corporations' equities and debt has emerged, formerly from being held by individuals to resting with institutions. These institutional owners are composed of private/corporate and public, noncorporate, lumped together as pension funds. Also called as 'fiduciary activists,' these have ushered in 'relationship investing,' further giving rise to a change in the relationship between corporate managers and owners. Public and noncorporate pension funds are slowly gaining an influence over corporate matters, which was formerly the sole responsibility of corporate managers.
