Postmodernism and contemporary society

Article Abstract:

The relevance of postmodern theory in shaping the society of the 1990s has often been debated. Postmodernism that has its origin in the literary skepticism of the 1960s started questioning the basis of postindustrial scientific and technological principles. The rise of consumer capitalism and neo-conservatism are the highlights of the postmodernist society. However this trend is fraught with weaknesses. It undermines the utility of empirical theories and gives a myopic view of the the social processes in the late 20th century.

Gentrification

Article Abstract:

Gentrification or housing rehabilitation is a distinguishing feature of postmodern cities. It marks a shift from the suburbanism of the 1960s that saw the exodus of people from the inner cities to the suburbs. Gentrification presents a rediscovery of the congested areas in the cities with all the heterogeneous social elements. The focus has shifted from the preservation of family to the cult of consumerism and urban culture. However the sporadic changes and resettlements do not follow a pattern of sustainable rehabilitation.

Postmodern architecture and urban design

Article Abstract:

The postmodernist approach to architecture is radically different from the modernists' designs for urban buildings. Postmodern architecture of the 1980s was conceived as a protest against the 'ugly, sterile and repressive' modernist designs initiated by Le Corbusier. Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami are archetypal postmodern cities with all the embellishments that project a picture of consumerist culture of the West. The geometric and uncluttered plans of the modernists have given way to irregular and congested designs.
