Predicting onset of drinking in a community sample of adolescents: the role of expectancy and temperament

Article Abstract:

Adolescents with a high expectancy of the beneficial effects of drinking on social relations have greater chances of drinking. Multivariate analysis of high school students shows that social expectancy is significantly related to start of drinking between baseline and a 12-month follow-up period. Univariate analysis shows variation in the EAS Sociability and Fear scores of drinkers and nondrinkers. Temperament probably affects drinking by acting on expectancies. Alcohol abuse prevention programs can be improved by incorporating social cognitive assessments.
