Race, class, and family structure: the case of family income

Article Abstract:

Analysis of demographic data from 1968 and 1988 shows a 6.7%-decline on the effect of race on family income. This supports the argument that race remains a factor in the income disparity between African Americans and whites. Among the significant findings of the research are that African Americans have lower mean incomes than whites and that the group composed of African Americans with higher educational and professional attainment is most adversely affected by the race factor. Married couple families also suffer more severe effects of race than do families headed by women.

Attitudes toward cohabitation, family, and gender roles: relationships to values and political ideology

Article Abstract:

A study on four hypotheses on the relationships between values and beliefs toward cohabitation, family and gender roles was conducted. Data gathered from white high school students were used to test these hypotheses. Consumerism Hypotheses was found to have minimal relationship with attitudes towards cohabitation, family and gender roles. Social Concerns Hypotheses revealed that males have a a positive attitude towards social concerns such as parenting. Religious concerns, on the other hand, draw a more positive attitude toward cohabitation and family.

Sibling cooperation and scholastic performance among Vietnamese-American secondary school students: an ethnic social relations theory

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the reasons for the superior performance of Vietnamese American youth in US schools and on how family relations affect academic achievement. Results show that family relations, specially sibling cooperation, positively impact school performance among Vietnamese American young people. Results, however, attribute cooperative relations in families on the close relations between family members and ethnic networks.
