Respecting ethnic elders: a perspective for care providers

Article Abstract:

Elderly ethnic persons are the only ones who can create integrity and dignity for themselves. However, it is the care providers' responsibility to contribute and support dignity and integrity creation. The LEARN model, which can facilitate cross-cultural communication, states that care providers should listen to patients explanations, explain perceptions, acknowledge and discuss differences, recommend treatment and negotiate. Medical assessment should consider the diversity of various lifestyles and recognize that dignity and respect is integral to the treatment process.

Bringing crime back in: toward a better understanding of police arrest decisions

Article Abstract:

Richard J. Lundman's conclusions on drunk driving enforcement and police arrest decisions is flawed. Lundman failed to show when the demeanor of criminals was determined. This is a crucial factor in determining police attitudes toward disrespectful behavior by offenders. Part of Lundman's incorrect conclusions can be attributed to data which he analyzed since the Midwest City police system does not include comprehensive information about all aspects of citizen criminality.

Some go backward, some go forward: police work in comparative perspective

Article Abstract:

The trend in books on police in the 1980s was to present policemen as human and concerned about society. An analysis of books on police set in different periods reveals that policemen are depicted as interested in controlling the anti-social elements in society. The books did not focus on the need for discretion among policemen, which would reduce abuse of power. All the books analyzed dealt with theoretical, practical and political themes.
