Social skills, expectancies, and drinking in adolescents

Article Abstract:

The comparative power of social skills, alcohol expectancies and drinking in predicting teenage drinking behavior was studied in a sample of 732 adolescents. Results showed that adolescent alcohol involvement was linked with positive alcohol expectancies, social skills deficits and negative cognitive structures concerning parents and teachers. Gender differences were also found on the basis of personal beliefs and alcohol expectancies. Antisocial behavior and assertiveness in boys were shown, while girls only exhibited antisocial behavior.

The relationship of perceived social support to substance use in offspring of alcoholics

Article Abstract:

This article examines adolescents with alcoholic parents and their attitudes toward substance use and their perception of social support. The authors maintain that adolescents, both with and without alcoholic parent, had higher perceived social support from friends over family, heavy marijuana and tobacco users had low perceived social support overall, and heavy alcohol users has higher friend perceived social support than lighter drinkers.

A two-stage model of peer influence in adolescent substance use: individual and relationship-specific differences in susceptibility to influence

Article Abstract:

Research shows that while low-risk adolescents are as apt as high-risk adolescents to acquire a peer context in which drinking and smoking are likely to occur, only high levels of friendship quality and peer acceptance induce adolescents to adopt substance-use behaviors.
