Social work and economic development in Papua New Guinea

Article Abstract:

Social work in Papua New Guinea has adopted a developmental model that suits social work practices in rural areas to overcome the problem of distorted development. The majority of its population has not benefited from the old developmental model. In the face of social and economic problems, social work has failed to make any substantial impact on the life of a major part of its population. However, the introduction of a new national social development policy has given impetus to rural development. This gives a central role to front line social workers in promoting rural economic development.

Women, environment, and sustainable development

Article Abstract:

The contributions of rural people, specially women, in social and sustainable development of rural regions were examined through the analysis of case studies done in Nepal showing the factors that were involved in the participation of rural people in forest resource management programs. Some of the factors involved in local participation in resources management were resource scarcity, regional size, number of household affected and proximity of resources to residences. The awareness of rural women on their roles in forest management resources contributed to sustained development.
