Soft commitment: self-control achieved by response persistence

Article Abstract:

The cost of switching from a response pattern leading to larger-later (LL) to a response pattern leading to smaller-sooner seems to restrict switching in pigeons. Experiments carried out on pigeons reveal that 'self-control' was attained by pecking continuously at the key leading to the LL reinforcer. This type of self-control known as 'soft commitment', achieved through persistence, is different from self-control attained through the refusal to accept changes.

The influence of prior choices on current choice

Article Abstract:

An experiment conducted on three pigeons choosing between random-interval (RI) and tandem, continuous-reinforcement, fixed-interval (crf-FI) reinforcement schedules by pecking either of two keys is illustrated. Despite the constancy, the rate at which pigeons switched from the RI to the crf-FI decreased sharply as RI waiting time increased, which shows that prior choices influenced current choice, an exercise effect.
