Status of migrant farmworkers in the United States: Helsinki Commission briefing

Article Abstract:

The Border Agricultural Workers' Union has been witness to the brutalizing and dehumanizing conditions that prevail in the US farmlands, particularly in the region of southern NM and far west TX. While farmwork poses great danger, workers in NM are excluded from the Workers' Compensation Law. Moreover, they receive extremely low wages, are denied medical benefits and have no access to health programs. They are also not granted collective bargaining rights. Without this right, their pathetic condition will continue. The Congress has the social responsibility to support the workers in asserting their right.

An outline of the situation of migrant farmworkers in the United States

Article Abstract:

The lack of employment security remains to be one of the biggest problems confronting migrant farmworkers in the US. Crowded housing is also a problem but the workers have long been accustomed to it. It is likewise important to note that children of farmworkers do not want to work in the fields. With regard to the composition of the population of farmworkers, Mexicans and Guatemalans comprise the present farm labor force. With the alarming rise in migration and subsequent decline in the number of farm jobs available, the US and Mexico need to impose tougher immigration policies.

Health needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers

Article Abstract:

The disease patterns of the migrant farmworker population in the US indicate a significant level of parasitic, infectious and chronic diseases. The incidence of diabetes is 300 times higher than the population in general. A report of the Center for Disease Control also indicates that farmworkers' risk for contracting tuberculosis was about six times higher than the general population. The health problems of this sector have been aggravated by low pay and inadequate social services.
