Suicide terrorism, occupation, and the globalization of martyrdom: A critique of Dying to Win

Article Abstract:

A review of the book Dying to Win by Robert Pape is presented which covers author's interpretations about suicide attacks, his notion about its success rate, and linkage of foreign occupation with suicide terrorism. It is argued that the occupation thesis explains the traditional pattern of suicide attacks, but ignores the transnational character of globalization of martyrdom, the visceral nature of grievances and the role played by Internet in indoctrinating, training and recruiting the globalized martyr.

What happened to suicide bombings in Israel? Insights from a terror-stuck model

Article Abstract:

A terror-stock model that treats the suicide bombing attack rate as a function of the number of terrorists available to plan and execute suicide bombings is proposed. The model suggests that the targeted killing of terror suspects sparks estimated recruitment to the terror stock that increases rather than decreasing the rate of suicide bombings.
