Tax limitations to reduce municipal property taxes: truth in taxation in Texas

Article Abstract:

Data from 93 Texas cities for a 12-year period were used to examine the impact of full disclosure on real per household property tax burdens. Results showed that the tax burdens were unaffected by the implementation of truth in taxation. The portion of the tax levied for operations was distinguished from that used for debt service since the roll back provision covers only the portion levied for operations, as per Texas law. Possible explanations for the weak effect of truth in taxation involve the rollback limit of 8% and the chance that full disclosure is truly working in Texas, as intended.

The effects of victim impact evidence on the verdicts and sentencing judgments of mock jurors

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding victim impact evidence on the verdict and sentencing decisions of jurors are discussed. Jurors receiving such evidence gave significantly harsher sentence recommendations and were more likely to impose capital punishment in their post-deliberation verdicts. Mock juries were used for the research.
