The clinical significance of binge eating in an obese population: support for BED and questions regarding its criteria

Article Abstract:

A study shows that binge eaters demonstrate higher levels of psychopathology and less competence in weight control. 75% of the 192 obese individuals in the study were binge eaters and 38% had binge eating disorders (BED). A comparative study shows that binge eaters with BED suffer from higher level of distress and depression than that of binge eaters without BED criteria. Women binge eaters indulge in severe binge eating in response to negative emotions probably due to social pressures.

The eating disorders as addiction: a psychobiological perspective

Article Abstract:

The magnitude of addiction exhibited by bulimic and anorexic patients were evaluated among 83 patients undergoing eating disorder programs at The Toronto Hospital. The influence of addictiveness on obsessive-compulsiveness and the effectiveness of bulimic and anorexic personality characteristics in predicting symptoms of eating disorders were also investigated. The findings provided strong evidence that eating disorder is an addictive behavior.
